Weber Wildlife Federation (WWF)
Shooting Range
A brief history
Weber Wildlife Federation (WWF) has served the residents of Weber County and surrounding communities for over one hundred (100) years. WWF was organized in 1919. Its first leaders were Al Hestmark, president, and Al Bruerton, secretary. Over the decades WWF and its members have supported many worthy projects. They purchased three-hundred fifty acres of land South of the Ogden and Weber Rivers and then donated it to the state for the development of Ogden Bay. This established Utah’s first game refuge. WWF developed and managed the Meadows campground in Ogden Canyon, organized severe winter game feedings, facilitated wildlife propagation projects, assisted in the creation of shooting sites in numerous locations throughout Northern Utah, and assisted the Utah State Fish and Game Department to create the hunter safety training program.
On July 18, 1964, WWF purchased over 300 acres of land in Liberty, Utah. This is the location of the WWF shooting range on Avon Road. In 1964, as it is today, the WWF range was the only outdoor shooting venue in Weber County. The property consists of a half-section of land that is a combination of canyons and foothills, with mature cottonwood, oak and pine tree stands. The hillsides are covered with oak, brush, sage, and mountain foliage. The area includes culinary water sources, and wooded picnic sites. The area was designed and initially approved by Weber County for the building of a recreational park, rifle, and pistol range, and for other purposes. WWF, in cooperation with the Weber County Planning Commission, is in the process of making improvements to the property to better accommodate the needs of its members.
